The Story of Fletcher Nine Fingers
Aika and I walk through the night. We stop when she is stumbling and can no longer stand.
I carry her deep into the trees.
The early sun is stabbing through the canopy. I chose a place that looks warm for her to lay and hide her under branches.
We are two days walk from the temple. With the slow pace of Aika, walking at night will require four or five days.
On the third day, the snow begins, and the boy demands to see the world.
The farmer’s wife knows what to do.
It is not enough.
The boy lives.
I must deliver the boy to the temple for training.
Fail, and my country will not survive the invasions.
